PHLEBOTOMY

PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN I PROGRAM

The Phlebotomy Technician I Program meets all California requirements for students to become a California licensed phlebotomist (CPTI). The program will introduce students to the field of phlebotomy and provide them with the basic and advanced skills in both theory and clinical practice. The program prepares students for the national certification examination from one of the certifying organizations approved by the California Department of Public Health.

Phlebotomy is the practice of drawing blood from patients and taking the blood specimens to the laboratory to prepare for testing.

As a Phlebotomy Technician you are an important member of the clinical laboratory team. New diagnostic techniques, clinical laboratory technology and automated instruments have greatly increased the volume of – and demand for – medical laboratory testing.

In a few months you can earn your Phlebotomy Technician I certificate and be eligible to apply for state licensure as a Phlebotomist. Phlebotomy is often an excellent stepping-stone to other careers and Medical Assistant or ECG Technician often complete this program to enhance their career opportunities.

The Phlebotomy Technician I program at GMC includes:

  • Classroom instruction and skills training
  • Laboratory Rotation at a federally approved CLIA laboratory, e.g. doctor office, clinic, research laboratory, clinical laboratory
  • National Certification Exam preparation and voucher for the NCE

During the program, you will be shown how to draw blood. You will practice your skills in the classroom so you are prepared and have confidence before you begin your laboratory rotation.

The clinical laboratory rotation is your prime opportunity to demonstrate mastery of the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom. In addition, the laboratory rotation allows you to demonstrate standards of behavior required in a professional arena. You will be expected to exhibit punctuality, thoroughness, professionalism, compassion, and a positive attitude to excel at your clinical rotation and, later, to retain your job and advance in your career.

Clinical Laboratory Rotation:  What To Expect

One of the most exciting and challenging experiences you’ll have at GMC is your clinical laboratory rotation, where you’ll be directly mentored by professionals. This is your chance to shine, as you’ll work to demonstrate your mastery in a hands-on clinical setting, exhibiting the knowledge and skills you’ve acquired in the classroom.

Reach Your Goals

The clinical externship very closely mirrors what you can expect in your chosen field: you will be expected to complete established goals – that is, a designated number of hours and just as you would expect in an employment environment, your performance will be carefully assessed. You will receive constructive criticism and you will be expected to achieve your goal of a passing grade from your externship site to earn your certificate.

The clinical laboratory rotation is also your prime opportunity to demonstrate the standards of behavior required in a professional arena. You will be expected to exhibit punctuality, thoroughness, professionalism, compassion, and a positive attitude to excel at your externship and, later, to retain your job and advance in your career.

Our Commitment to Your Success

Throughout your clinical laboratory rotation GMC provides you with the support you need to succeed. Your demonstration of professionalism while on rotation, together with your competent demonstration of the knowledge and skills you’ve acquired in the classroom help prepare you for employment.
